Recognizing that people nowadays spend far too much time staring at a phone screen, Whitney Wolfe Herd had a snooze function put into the Bumble app in early September. Most other app developers would not put in a feature that reduces the number of active users but that is exactly what she did. Users can hit the snooze button and choose to have it last a day, three days, a week, or permanently until they un-snooze the app. This button stops all notifications from the app.

She says that she’s not terribly concerned about damaging Bumble’s churn or other key performance indicators. She feels it is more important for people to be able to get away from notifications for a while whether they are going on vacation, a digital detox, experiencing new things, need to concentrate on their jobs, or whatever other reason they have. Whitney Wolfe Herd says she recently took a three-week break from social media herself and feels great about that.

Whitney Wolfe Herd has been having a busy summer in other ways as well. In July she was chosen by Ron Howard and Brian Glazer to become a member of the board of directors of their entertainment firm, Imagine Entertainment. She is now a non-voting member on this board along with Richard Rosenblatt, Jeff Sagansky, Tom Freston, and Michael Lynton. Brian Glazer says that she was selected because she is a visionary and one to think outside the box. He was also impressed that she built a global brand in just four years that also has a very vibrant community invested in it.
