Mary McChesney Contribution to Orange Coast College

The love for Orange Coast College (OCC), drove a retired Professor to offer a generous donation to the college. Mary McChesney, a retired professor, advanced $1 million towards the construction of a new planetarium in the institution. She partly attributes her action to her late partner, Adelyn Bonin. Bonin was an art professor at OCC before her retirement in 1983.

McChesney, 91, expects the new planetarium to be the source of scientific knowledge not only to college students but also members of the surrounding community. The facility is expected to cost over $20 Million. McChesney donation came as a big boost to OCC; her donation will be utilized to purchase Foucault pendulum — a device used to demonstrate Earth’s rotation.

Doug Bennett, executive director of the Orange Coast College Foundation, weighed in on McChesney’s donation. Bennett affirmed McChesney’s continued support to OCC through sponsoring scholarships and support of other projects.

The construction work on the new planetarium began on 2016. The work began after the old planetarium constructed in 1950 was demolished. The old facility could no longer keep up with the changing technology; it also had a small sitting capacity compared to the new facility which will have a 129 seat capacity. Also, the new planetarium will have an exhibit featuring a scenery on a spherical display globe.

OCC is a community college located in Costa Mesa, California. The college was founded in 1947 and ever since it has expanded to be one of the largest colleges in the United States. Presently, the institution enrolls over 25,000 students. OCC is famous for its modern facilities coupled with diverse academic programs for students to choose from. OCC is leading its peers in Orange County regarding students it enables to join the University of California and California State University.
