George Soros: For Justice and a Free World

At number 19 on the list of the richest men in the world, George Soros is an enigmatic Hungarian-American investor who made his fortune from trading stock and being a genius in the financial world. He is also the founder of several companies and the Open Society Organization that helps people stop intolerance towards minorities.


George was born in Hungary in 1930 and grew up there during the Nazi occupation of the Second World War, and he fled to London. He joined the London School of Economics and worked as a porter to make ends meet and to fund his education.

He finished well and got a job working at several financial firms for several years until he was able to fly solo in 1970. However, his success came much later in a dramatic sale. Learn more on about George.

George is a graduate of the London School of Economics where he earned both his;

  • Bachelor of Science
  • Master of Science in Philosophy

It was in the year 1970 that he decided to start his firm that he appropriately named the Soros Fund Management.

The Bank of England

It was the year 1992 when George decided to short sell the British Sterling for $10 billion. This broke the Bank of England, and he was able to walk away with a staggering $1 billion in just a single day.

Nowadays, he has been actively participating in his philanthropy work and the management of the following companies where he serves in several positions:

  • He is the manager of the Soros Fund Management
  • He is the chairman of the Open Society Foundations
  • He is the advisor of Quantum Fund

Although he says that he has retired, George hasn’t gone anywhere and is now very heavily involved in championing minority rights that have long been trampled on by intolerant people.

Open Society

As one of the biggest philanthropists the world has ever seen, George has always been very candid about his stand when it comes to the oppressed who are ostracized because they are a little different from the rest of us. He decided to do something about it.

So, he founded an open society, an organization that currently operates on over 100 countries worldwide and has been responsible for making the world a little better by bringing down the invisible but devastating walls of differences that divide us.

George has been doing philanthropy work his entire life and has been responsible for several acts that have set him apart like:

  • He gave scholarships to black South African students.
  • In the early 80s, he provided printers to the Communist Eastern Bloc to help them print banned material.

He has also recently pledged $500 million that would help with refugee work as he was once a refugee.
